The matriarch among Santa Clara potters is Margaret Tafoya. She and her children and children's children have dominated the prize winners at all Indian Art Shows for years and years. Margaret's pottery is known for its finely polished finish and its precise incised/carved designs. Margaret's art work exemplifies the traditional shapes of Pueblo pottery: wedding vases, storage jars, olla, canteens, and plates.
When Margaret was still exhibiting at the Santa Fe Indian Market, collectors would gather at her booth two hours before the Saturday morning opening time to get in line to bid on her pieces. Since she typically exhibited only two or three pieces, the collectors were highly vocal in their offering prices.
